The Department of Rheumatology at Liaquat National Hospital is an established clinical and academic set up. It concentrates on providing care to patients affected by a variety of common and uncommon Rheumatic diseases, which encompasses a wide scope of musculoskeletal and systemic autoimmune diseases. We also run exclusive paediatric rheumatology clinic. Our mission is to provide excellent patient care while seeking to understand the causes and natural history to provide the best available treatment. We aim to educate our patients about their conditions with compassion while maintaining a high standard of healthcare. Our department works in collaboration with Medicine and Surgical allied departments in the hospital to deal with different complications of the Rheumatic diseases.

Services

Crystal Identification

Crystal identification in synovial fluid is done to make the diagnosis of Gout or Pseudo gout, within Rheumatology department.

Inflammatory and Metabolic Diseases

Complicated patients with inflammatory and metabolic diseases are reviewed critically and given proper time and attention. All patients are counseled about their diseases, treatment options and complications.

Paediatrics Rheumatology Clinic

Autoimmune diseases presenting in paediatric population require unique expertise in terms of diagnosis and management. Our paediatric rheumatology clinics allow patients to seek consultations and management from highly specialized physicians.

Rheuma-Derma Clinic

Rhematologists and Dermatologists sit together to diagnose the disease and find out the best treatment options.

General Clinic

Patients with all inflammatory and non-inflammatory diseases are seen in general clinics. Comprehensive care is provided to a large number of new and follow-up patients.

Joint and Soft Tissue Injections

Patients with arthritis, those who cannot tolerate pain or whose pain is not effectively controlled by analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents are given intra-articular glucocorticoid and visco-supplements. Joint aspiration is also performed to establish a diagnosis as well as to relieve effusion.

PRP (PLATELET RICH PLASMA)

PRP (PLATELET RICH PLASMA) procedure for joint and soft tissues. It is derived from patients own blood. The injection contains plasma with higher concentration of platelets found in normal blood. PRP attempts to take an advantage of blood’s natural healing properties to repair damaged cartilage tendons, ligaments or muscle. It is most commonly used in knee osteoarthritis. It reduces pain, improve joint function and possibly slow, halt, or even repair damage to cartilage.

Education and Training

Liaquat National Hospital has the honor to be the first and only training program accredited with College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan for fellowship in Rheumatology in Sindh Province. Regular classes are held for Medical Residents, House officers and Rheumatology fellows, which include: topic and cases discussions, journal clubs, radiology/histopathology classes, sub-specialty liaison, bedside teaching, grand rounds, teaching undergraduates and postgraduates, synovial fluid crystal identification, ward rounds and inpatient care. We also arrange workshops and public awareness programs and CME programs on different Rheumatic diseases throughout the year.
