The Department of Histopathology and Cytology is an essential part of laboratory medicine that allows body tissues to be accurately analyzed and tested for pathologies. Every piece of body tissue removed by a physician or surgeon makes it way to the histopathology lab where it undergoes series of tests, using leading edge technology to provide results that can be helpful for the doctors to make diagnosis and plan the best treatment for their patients.
The Department of Histopathology and Cytology process approximately 16000 biopsies and 3000 cytology samples per year. We take immense pride in being pioneers of liquid based cytology in Pakistan as well as being one of the very few on – site frozen section facilities in the city. Our department is ISO certified and we regularly uphold the standards set up by External Quality Assurance by College of American Pathologists (CAP).
Education and Training
We offer a fully credentialed residency training program that allows our residents to qualify for FCPS by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan. Our department organizes journal clubs and case discussion panels that encourages exchange of knowledge and ideas among the trainees and medical students. Unique and complicated cases are discussed in regular inter-departmental meetings. In addition to internal audit, inter-departmental case reviews are also done routinely to provide authentic quality service. The department regularly conducts and organizes CME programs for medical fraternity. Inter-hospital multi-specialty tumor board meetings are organized by the department on weekly basis for planning the best possible management for patient care.
The residents and faculty are actively engaged in research work. The department regularly participates in pathology conferences all over the country to present our papers including oral presentations and posters. On an average, 6-7 original research papers are published in international journals annually.
