Department of Molecular Pathology
INTRODUCTION

Established in year 2007, Department of Molecular Pathology is contributing significantly towards the vision & mission of Liaquat National Hospital. The idea behind the establishment was to provide quality diagnostic services, at affordable rates and in reach of every one.

Our vision is to achieve the status of “Center of Excellence In Genetic Testing and Molecular Diagnosis”

• Department of Molecular Pathology is ISO-9001-2008 certified and is affiliated with College of American Pathologist (CAP) for third party proficiency testing

• All tests are performed under strict quality control (No open bench Practice) by highly qualified and trained staff and reported to meet the quality standards established in Molecular testing.

• All testing is carried out on IVD and CE marked Products according to recent guidelines.

The Team of Molecular Pathology is comprised of multi-disciplinary, energetic and enthusiastic individuals holding MS/BS qualification in, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Genetics and Medical Technology.


EQUIPMENTS

Well equipped with the state of the art technology, the fleet of instruments includes Real Time PCR, Class IIB2 and Class II A2 Biosafety Cabinets, high Speed centrifuge (Refrigerated with sealed rotor, Minus 40 Freezer, Cytovision software for Karyotyping and Fluorescent Imaging, Fluorescent Microscope, GeXP Genetic Analysis System, Liquid Nitrogen Storage, Inverted Microscope, CO2 Incubator.


SERVICES

On Oct 12th 2012, Department of Molecular Pathology launched GeneXpress Program with the objective of delivering PCR test results in 24 hours.

Within Molecular Pathology Five domains of services are functional which includes

ii. Hepatitis B,C & D Virus PCR
iii. Hepatitis C Virus Genotyping Qualitative PCR
iv. HSV,CMV, HSV I & II Virus Qualitative PCR
v. HIV Qualitative PCR
vi. HIV Quantitative PCR
vii. HPV 16/18 typing and HPV Screening by PCR
viii. CCHFV Qualitative PCR

2. Molecular Bacteriology

i. MTB Qualitative PCR
ii. MTB MDR Qualitative PCR

3. Molecular Immunology

i. ANA (ANA, AMAASMA,AGPCA) by IFA
ii. ANA Profile

4. Molecular Oncology

i. Her-2 gene Amplification testing by FISH*

5. Molecular Genetics

i. FLT3 PCR,
ii. JAK2 PCR,
iii. HLA B27 PCR,
iv. Delta 508 PCR,
v. Chromosome analysis (Karyotyping)

• All these tests are done on daily basis except Sundays.
• *Her2- gene Amplification by FISH is reported in 5 working days

The proposed list of new parameters, expected to be launched shortly, include

Molecular Oncology Tests: BRCA PCR, KRAS PCR, , BCR-abl PCR, EGFR PCR, BCR abl FISH, KRAS FISH, EGFR FISH


ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES

• Department contributes in 4 year Degree programs in Diagnostic Lab Sciences and Medical Technology affiliated with University of Karachi.
• Department also offers one month Internship, Eligibility Criteria is BSc, BS, MSc, MS, M.Phil Fellow, Ph.D fellow in Genetics, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Medical Technology
