Liaquat National Medical College

Department of General surgery

Serving the community for half a century, Department of General Surgery at Liaquat National Hospital is committed to impart quality service to its clientele. Since inception, the guiding principles have been to provide highest quality of care to the ailing. With highly qualified consultant surgeons, post- fellowship registrars, residents and interns supported by round the clock cover of experienced and skilled nursing staff; we form a vigorous workforce ensuring the delivery of comprehensive surgical care.

The services offered by us cover the breadth of General Surgery including:

- Advanced Laparoscopy  Surgery
- Breast Surgery
- Day-Care (Ambulatory) Surgery
- Endocrine (eg. Thyroid) Surgery
- Oncological (Cancer) Surgery
- Colorectal Surgery
- Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery
- Trauma and Emergency Surgery

These services are supported by an extremely strong and comprehensive lattice of a wide spectrum of clinical and non-clinical services. The belief in interdependence is concrete and the entire hospital functions as a single unit. The radiology department offers 24 hour services supporting the department with an array of x-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, MRIs, vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology. The laboratory has a comprehensive armamentarium of investigations ranging from simple blood investigations to advanced genetic testing. Its services are also augmented by an amply stocked blood bank. The gastroenterology department backs up our service by providing round the clock endoscopic services. The clinical services of the rest of the disciplines are also insured by our interdependent system. This robust infrastructure enables us to function as a tertiary care center making the institute a hub for treating complex and complicated patients from all over the country.

We have a modern, purpose-built in-patient ward, out-patient clinics and a high-tech state of the art operating suite. The suite with its compliment of ten theaters, qualified technicians and a diligent administration is one of its kind in the city. The surgical ward also incorporates a ten bedded high dependency unit with dedicated nursing for patients who are seriously ill or those who are being stepped down from the intensive care.

The facility provides efficient and highly skilled surgical care. The pre-admission assessment clinic is staffed by experienced anesthetists who evaluate the patient’s suitability for day care surgery. Patients are discharged after surgery on the same day as their admission, with guidance for care and convalescence at home.

Department’s foremost investment for the future has always been its Post graduate surgical residency training program. Alumni from LNH are playing a leading role in delivery of surgical care not only across the country but also internationally. Based on holistic approach the program is aimed at inculcating meticulous clinical acumen, proficient operative skills and principled character values in the trainee. There is a growing focus on promoting research skills as well. Personal commitment of all faculties has ensured that high caliber surgeons pass out successfully qualifying in the FCPS, FRCS/MRCS examination through the years.

Department of General Surgery regularly organizes symposia, workshops and CME meetings to promote understanding of surgical pathology, advanced surgical skills and developing consensus based practice guidelines.

The Department has a growing focus on Clinical Research activities. Recently an electronic database and audit system has been incorporated to assist in this regard. Breast unit already maintains a detailed database and has cancer registry of over 5000 patients. The department is involved in multiple research trials in addition to indigenous research projects

The Department has recently obtained the ISO certification for its management system. It is the first independent clinical department in the country to obtain such an honorable certification. This adds to the credibility of the services provided and signifies the high standards that are maintained in the Department of General Surgery.
