Department of Nephrology

The Division of Nephrology and Hypertension cares for patients with a diverse range of kidney diseases through inpatient consult service, ward/transplant service, outpatient clinics and hemodialysis facilities.

It has gained recognition for its expertise in difficult to manage and complicated hypertension cases. The division also has designated specialists in clinical hypertension.

Nephrology ward is a 27 bedded unit, which includes a separate male ward, female ward and private wing. The department has its own nine bedded intensive care unit with ventilator support and separate 4 bedded step down unit. 24hours emergency care is provided to all the patients. The indoor patients are managed under supervision of consultants, senior registrars and fellows. Patients are provided with facilities of all investigations and advanced radiology under the same shelter.  It gives an ample exposure and experience for our training program.

Among its many services, the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension offers consultation, evaluation and treatment for patients with:

- Acute and chronic renal disease
- Hypertension, especially complex, complicated or secondary forms of the disease.
- Fluid and electrolytic disorders such as abnormalities in metabolism of salt and water, potassium, calcium, phosphorous and magnesium.
- Intoxications and poisoning.

The division also offers all forms of renal replacement therapy such as:

- Hemodialysis
- Chronic ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (soon re-starting)
- Home care nursing

Special services that are offered include:

- Renal biopsy (CT and Ultrasound guided)
- 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure recordings and monitoring
- 24 hrs hemodialysis facility
- Kidney transplant care
- Metabolic evaluation of kidney stone patients
- Education

The Department of Nephrology forms an integral part of the patient care services provided at LNH. It has a twenty seven bedded ward, nine bedded ICU and a very active hemodialysis unit. Five kidney transplants have so far been performed with collaboration of SIUT and attempts are underway to develop our own indigenous program.

The department of Nephrology comprises of a separate unit of Haemodialysis, which provides round the clock service, seven days a week for chronic haemodialysis as well as acute emergency dialysis. Dialysis unit comprises of 16 Hemodialysis machines. Unit is staffed with well-trained nurses and technicians. Every patient is screened for Hepatitis B and C on first visit. There are separate machines for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and non-reactive patients, which is an added benefit to the patients as it protects them from acquiring hepatitis during dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis is also offered in our unit. During dialysis, rounds are done by fellows and consultant.

Department of Nephrology offers a comprehensive fellowship program, which covers a trainee's teaching demands from theoretical, clinical and exam perspective. Morning reports are conducted daily, which includes bedside clinical teaching, case discussion and nephrology updates and topic reviews.  There is monthly morbidity and mortality meeting, which reinforce better patient service. Research activities are mandatory and are supervised by Head of the Department.

Department is starting separate Peritoneal Dialysis teaching sessions and home based patient facilitation services. A continuous medical education program is conducted quarterly to give awareness to general practitioners, trainee residents and even general population on common clinical problems related to the kidney disease.

Nephrology Department has a very busy outpatient department and clinics in all disciplines of nephrology, hypertension, vasculitis, dialysis and renal stone.

There is a regular curricular activity calendar in which the trainee has to actively participate which includes:

- Monthly morbidity and mortality meeting
- Participation in monthly intercity meetings of Pakistan Society of Nephrology.
- Participation in quarterly arranged CMEs by Nephrology Department
- Participation in Medical Grand Rounds
- Participation in biennial forum of Pakistan Society of Nephrology
- Participation in any National or International symposia’s and seminars

Educational activities in the division, ranges from teaching medical students to providing advanced training for fellows. The Renal Fellowship Program currently has seven fellows and includes a comprehensive training program that covers all aspects of clinical nephrology and actively involves the fellows in research. The division’s faculty also provide core curriculum to residents and students, and participate in continuing medical education (CME) programs sponsored by Liaquat National Hospital & Medical College.
