INTRODUCTION

The department of Pathology Laboratory services is ISO-9001-2008 certified and equipped with latest, state of art IVD instruments certified with international organizations and statutes and regulated through scientific and diagnostic boards and regulatory authorities. It provides around 600 routine and special diagnostic test services for more than 30 disciplines of medicine, surgery and allied specialties and takes care of nearly 250,000 indoor and outdoor patients, 24 hrs a day, on yearly basis.

The department of Pathology Lab services comprise of six independent units including, Hematology and Blood bank, Biochemistry, Histopathology, Microbiology and Molecular Pathology besides a dedicated laboratory collection center.

The department is extensively pursue and ensures quality measures of accuracy and precision for its analytical testing services and associated with internal and external quality (International & National) control programs such as EQAS (External Quality Assurance Survey), National Reference Laboratory Australia, NEQAPP (National External Quality Control Program-Pakistan) and CAP (College of American Pathologist).

The department of Pathology Laboratory services is managed and administered by highly qualified, nationally and internationally experienced and dedicated faculty including skilled and professional staff which provides quality assured and timely diagnostic services to its patients and customers.

The faculty of Lab services is also recognized and involved in teaching and training of degree and fellowship programs such as BS-Medical Technology, MBBS and FCPS affiliated with University of Karachi and College of Physicians and Surgeons-Pakistan.

The Pathology Laboratory services are offered in following specialties:

SERVICES

The Haematology department is equipped with highly sophisticated and state of art, fully automated analyzers; Systex K-4500 and XE-2000 for complete blood picture and CA-1500 (for coagulation test). The unit offers wide range of routine and special tests to valued customers. The tests vary from routine complete blood picture and coagulation profiles of highly sensitive assays such as clotting factors and coagulation inhibition analyses, haemopoietic progenitor cell counts, bone marrow aspiration and trephine biopsies.

Blood Bank
The blood bank unit is equipped with modern facilities -80oC cryofuge, Platelet Pheresis and plasmapherises CS-3000 cell separators and fully automated, Axym-MEIA instruments for screening of Hepatitis B, antigens, HIV, HCV, malaria and STDs such as syphilis. It’s hygienic and clean environment facilities both patients and the staff.

Department of Biochemistry
The Department of Biochemistry equipped automated chemistry (Hitachi 912), Hormones / Tumor markers (Elecys 2010 and Access 2), electrolytes (Nova-4, Nova -4 CRT, Nova8) and blood gases (Nova-PHOX and PHOX Plus) analyzers and manual testing spectronic instruments.
The test services of Biochemistry department are provided in the form of individual tests/parameters as well as multiple test profiles such as liver kidney, cardiac, pancreatic, thyroid and fertility functions tests, ions and electrolytes, dynamic tests, arterial blood gases, cardiac markers, tumor markers, reproductive hormones and several other urinary and fluid chemistry test profiles. The quality assured services of the department are routed through international boards and societies such as IFCC, AACC, DGKC and ASCLS.

Department of Histopathology
The Department of Histopathology is equipped with latest and state of art technical equipments, which includes advanced tissue processors, Gross Lab, Embedding Centers, Microtomes, Cryotome, Cytospin, Immunostaining center, double head and immuno-flourescent microscopes. It offers services in routine Histopathology and Cytology. Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC) and procedure, skin biopsy, frozen sections, Immuno-histochemistry, Tumor Markers as well as Estrogen and Progesterone receptors and Immuno-flourescent studies.

Department of Microbiology
Department has latest facilities and equipment; all tests are performed by qualifies technologists and are supervised by consultants.
The department provides facility for urgent reporting of stat samples like CSF, β-HCG and drug levels.

The department is involved in Infection Control activities of the Hospital, as an active member of Infection Control Committee. The faculty is also involved in teaching in medical college and nursing schools and in various academic and research work.

Department of Molecular Pathology
Equipped with the state of art technology, including Roche COBAS Amplicor automated PCR, Corbett research Rotor Gene 6000 Two channel Fluorescent Quantitative real time PCR, Class II A2 Biosafety Cabinets, High speed centrifuge with sealed rotor etc. All tests are performed under strict quality control by highly qualified and trained staff and reported to meet the quality standards established in Molecular testing.

LNH Laboratory Collection Center and Collection Points:
Department of Pathology Laboratory Services also has its dedicated collection center conveniently located near Wajid Ali Shah Complex and administered by a deputy manager and its team of experienced staff. The Laboratory recently also opened its first Lab collection point at North Karachi (UP More Location) in October 2009.
Opening of some more Lab Collection outlets is under progress in different localities of Karachi so that the patients and customers can easily access our quality assured and timely diagnostic services without any hassle.
