Department of ENT / Head & Neck Surgery
INTRODUCTION

The department of ENT I Head & Neck Surgery is one of the major tertiary referral units in Pakistan. Patients are referred not only from Karachi but from other parts of the country as well. We deal with full range or ENT diseases including head and neck cancer.

SERVICES

Out-Patient Department
Situated in the newly constructed out-patient block, the ENT unit has facilities for diagnostic endoscopy and microsuction of the ears. Clinics are conducted six days a week where patients are seen on a first come first serve basis. Afternoon clinics are also being started. These clinics will run on an appointment system. Records are maintained of all the patients attending clinics and are kept in the department.

In-Patient Department
The 20-bedded ENT ward is staffed by personnel trained in looking after patients in this particular specialty. The ward comprises of semi-private and private rooms.

Head & Neck Cancer Services
Large number of patients with head & neck cancer (cancer of mouth, throat. nose, sinuses, and neck glands) attend the department. These patients are managed in a planned, coordinated manner. The emphasis is on quick diagnosis and early treatment. We work in close consultation with medical oncologist (cancer specialist), radiation oncologist, reconstructive surgeon and pathologist to formulate a multi-disciplinary comprehensive management plan for our patients.

Audiology Services (Hearing Tests)
A trained audiologist runs the unit facilities for pure tone audiometry and impedance testing. The tests are carried out in a proper soundproof cubicle. The service is available in the afternoon with prior appointment.

Children upto five years of age or mentally handicapped require a special type of test to assess their hearing. This is known as Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry (BSER or BERA). This test is carried out in neurophysiology department which is part of the neurology services.

Speech Therapy
Speech therapy for various non-surgical causes of hoarseness is provided by trained speech and language therapists. This service is also provided in the department of neurology.
